Truck driver robbed on highway

In a fresh incident of highway robbery, highway robbers attacked a driver of a fish transporting truck on the NH-17 at Cuncolim, even as the fish merchants have stopped complaining to the police for want of police action.
A truck driver transporting fish was attacked on the head by a group of motorcycle borne miscreants on the highway earlier last week. While the miscreants managed to lift away cash of Rs 4000 from the vehicle, the injured driver was rushed to a private nursing home for treatment.
Fish merchants pointed out that a similar incident had occurred at Ponda earlier last week, wherein miscreants waylaid a fish carrying truck and decamped with cash.
President of Goa wholesale fish merchants Association, M Ibrahim said that the merchants have stopped complaining to the police since there’s been not a single detection of robbery incidents between Karmal Ghat-Balli Section.
“We had in the past complained to the Cuncolim police for night patrolling on the NH-17 to keep the robbers at bay, but the incidents have not abated. There’s no point in lodging complaints with the police”, Ibrahim said, when quizzed whether the robbery incident was brought to the notice of the Cuncolim police.
Unlike in the past, truck drivers now carry only money to meet the fuel requirements as a precautionary measure, with the police unable to crack down on the miscreants, source said. [H]
