Vaddy Sports Club, Merces thumped Bhagwati Sports Club 2-0 in a GFA Second Division football league match at Dr Remigio Pinto ground, Taleigao, Thursday. There was no score at half time.
The match started 20 minutes late as two match officials – Anthony Vaz and Inacio Rodrigues failed to report at the venue. This is not the first time that Inacio failed to report for a match, but the GFA insisted that his failure on January 14 for the Vaddy-Carambolim match was insignificant.
Jan Rodrigues was the lone official present and in the given circumstances match commissioner Gregory Estrocio started the match with organiser Gonsal Peixoto and a local, Govind Palyenkar as assistant referees.
The teams started slowly and took their time to settle.
Bhagwati’s first threat came in the 10th minute after Vishal dribbled past a couple of Vaddy defenders but he was denied a shot as rival goalkeeper Sachin grabbed the ball with a superb lunge.
At the other end, Vaddy’s Govind sent a well measured cross to Ramesh in the danger zone but Bhagwati defender Sudesh cleared it in the 15th minute.
Vaddy tried hard to break the deadlock but tries from Francis and Milton in the 30th and 40th minutes went wide.
After resumption, Vaddy’s Atish’s corner kick found Govind, whose goalbound shot was blocked by a Bhagwati defender inside the box in the 50th minute.
However, Vaddy controlled the proceeding and surged ahead in the 59th minute after Milton picked up a long ball from Saish and chipped over onrushing Sachin.
The opener came as a confidence booster for Vaddy who tried hard to double their lead. They could have scored the second in the 63rd minute but Ramesh’s inswinging corner hit the upright. Two minutes later, Ramesh sent a clever ball to Govind, who timed his run perfectly and chipped over Sachin to make it 2-0.
Govind could have registered his brace in the 80th minute but his close range shot was blocked by the rival custodian. [H]
