Varca VP sets deadline for housing complexes

Come December 10 and the Varca Panchayat will undertake a head count of multi-dwelling units to ascertain whether they have complied with the directions to put in place composting units to treat waste generated in the building.
The panchayat has set December 9 as the deadline for the all the 17 multi-dwelling housing complexes to construct the composting units or face action. The panchayat has already sent individual letters to the buildings to comply with the directions by December 9. Sarpanch Luiza Pereira told Herald that the panchayat would verify the compliance of the directions to the housing complexes from the first week of December.
“The panchayat has given the multi-dwelling units sufficient time to put in place the composting units’, she said.
The Varca Village Panchayat has already roped in environmentalist Clinton Vaz to take care of the plastic waste generated in the village.
Varca is amongst the three village panchayats along Salcete’s coastal belt where the High Court has banned issuance of licences for new constructions. In fact, issuance of licences for new constructions have come to a halt over the last two years as the Goa State Pollution Control Board has claimed that the panchayat body has not complied with the High Court directions in respect of waste disposal.
The Sarpanch claimed that the panchayat has put in place plastic waste management and has now made mandatory setting up of composting units. [H]
