Vehicle underpass at Old Goa-Karmali junction

Old Goa: To address the chaos at the Old Goa-Karmali junction, and reduce the number of accidents, the public works department (PWD) has decided to construct a vehicular underpass at the junction for which chief minister Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone.”To facilitate free movement of traffic a vehicular underpass 11m wide on each side has been proposed with slip roads and utility ducts. To resolve this and to streamline the traffic flow, the construction of the vehicular underpass has been proposed,” a PWD official said.According to the project plan, traffic from old Goa proceeding to Karmali railway station will have uninterrupted flow below national highway NH 4-A. Above the underpass, a 38m wide, six-lane road will allow traffic from Panaji to Ponda and in the opposite direction to proceed unhindered.
“The government is making efforts to create infrastructure of international standards but we need the cooperation of the people in the process of development and to achieve the goal of strengthening necessary infrastructure,” Parrikar.Parrikar said that the government was committed to provide better road connectivity in the entire state to regulate traffic. “This project will be ready in one year. PWD will take care to see that it gets ready,” PWD minister Ramkrishana Dhavalikar said. The project cost was estimated at Rs 47.85crore but was awarded to M Venkata Rao Infra Projects for Rs 29.86crore.
