Vodafone Cup: Areal move into quarters
Sao Jose de Areal entered the quarter-finals of Vodafone inter-village football tournament when they registered a solitary goal victory against CRSC, Navelim played at Rosary grounds, Navelim on Tuesday.
The teams were locked goalless in the first half of play as both teams created several goal-bound moves, but couldn’t find the mark due to tight defending at both ends.
CRSC pressed hard to score with nice moves, keeping the ball low for around fifteen minutes of play. However, Sao Jose de Areal who took a wee bit to settle down then took control of the proceedings and matched CRCS in all the departments of the game.
Areal’s Mario Barreto and Connie Dias who stood firm in the defence also began to move up and provided solid support to the midfielders to feed the strikers upfront.
This strategy paid rich dividends as the CRSC team found it quite difficult to contain the fast moving Areal strikers.
Even as the team could not find the mark in the first half of play, Areal started the second session in great fashion when they scored within ten minutes.
Areal’s playmaker Raymond Fernandes while moving down the middle dodged three CRSC defenders and on entering the box, saw striker Francisco Barreto unmarked. Wasting no time, Raymond intelligently passed the ball to Francisco Barreto who scored in style to beat the Navelim
