Water-logging becoming a chronic problem at Quepem

Curchorem: People from Quepem and surrounding areas, including students, have to face various hardships due to water-logging at many places on the main road from Quepem market to police station.Speaking to this correspondent President of Quepem Citizen Committee Evangelisto Da Costa said that PWD had failed to clean the gutters on both sides of the road, before monsoons, which had led to the clogging during heavy rains. We had complained to the municipality and the PWD office several times, but no one seems to be bothered to solve the problem, Da Costa said.He also complained that chunks of the mango tree cut five years ago were still lying on the side of the road near the police station, causing clogging and water-logging.When contacted, the Chairman of Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) Raul Pereira said since the road was a main road, the maintenance was done by PWD, adding that he had written at least three letters between April and May this year requesting to clean the gutters before monsoon.
Forget about doing the work, they did not even bother to reply to our letters and I now urge the PWD minister to take cognizance of matter and direct the concerned officer to clear the drainage at the earliest, he demanded. When confronted about the matter of not clearing drainages before the onset of monsoon, Assistant Engineer of PWD Digamber Kulkarni said they are busy filling potholes with the limited labour force. We made an estimate and sent the proposal to Disaster Management Authority for approval but now I am going to the spot to check the situation, Kulkarni managed to reply. However, this correspondent followed the matter and learnt that till late Tuesday evening Kulkani has not visited the site.
