Water-starved Fatorda locals confront PWD officials
Water starved residents of Fatorda led by MLA Vijay Sardessai gheraoed PWD officials over water shortage in the constituency on Monday.
The gherao was lifted only after the Superintending engineer gave a written assurance that water meant for the residents will not be diverted to Zuari industries or Bits Pilani. Carrying water buckets and utensils, agitated residents descended at the PWD Office this morning and gheraoed officials. They carried placards demanding the suspension of the Superintending Engineer Srikant Dhond for the water scarcity.
Later briefing newsmen, Sardessai said the Parivartan ushered by Goans will prove disastrous for the people if water is diverted to industries. He demanded that the government should stop fooling the people of Goa by attributing the water shortage to water production. “The government should work out solutions and not give lame excuses”, he added.
Replying to a question, Sardessai said he has no complaints against PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavlikar saying that he is convinced that the Minister did not issue orders for water diversion to the industries.
Meanwhile, the superintending engineer said water supply to the residents of Fatorda will stabilize in the next 8-10 days. Dhond said he has given a written assurance that water from Fatorda will not be diverted to Zuari or Bits Pilani. [H]
