Woman’s gold worth 1 lakh stolen at Mapusa

A woman was tricked into parting with her gold ornaments worth 1 lakh by two conmen posing as police officials in Mapusa on Sunday.
The two approached Mary Dias, a Mapusa resident, and asked her to take off her ornaments as there had been an increase in cases of chain-snatching. Dias was walking along the road opposite the Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank when two men walked up to her and introduced themselves as cops.
They said they were on patrolling duty and warned her about criminals in the area, sources said.
The duo made Dias take off her ornaments and put them in a paper and then into her bag. She did not suspect anything when the duo offered to help. On the pretext of putting the ornaments in her bag, the duo stole the, the police said. When she realized she had been cheated she cried for help, but by then the conmen had fled the scene and people had gathered.
"She gave them a gold chain and two gold bangles weighing 48g worth 1 lakh," the complaint said.
Police registered the offence and further investigations are in progress. [TOI]
