Yet no full-fledged SDM, CO for Margao
Government seems in no hurry to appoint a full-fledged Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) for Margao and a full-time Chief Officer for the A-Class Margao Municipal Council.
It’s now 20 days since the government placed under suspension then SDM and deputy Collector Dasharath Redkar in connection with land acquisition during his tenure as Under Secretary, Revenue. After a two-day delay, the government ordered Deputy Collector Revenue Surendra Naik to hold additional charge of SDM till further orders. In the meantime, an IAS officer, who has been functioning as Assistant Collector in the District Collectorate, South, has been given the charge of Margao SDM.
But both staff and litigants have complained of the inordinate delay on the part of the government to depute a full-fledged SDM for Margao. “An SDM plays a crucial role in the sub-division. It is high time the government appoint a full-fledged SDM for Margao,” remarked a senior Collectorate staffer.
Incidentally, the affairs of the A-Class Margao Municipal Council are being looked after by a part-time Chief officer, Sandhya Kamat. After a controversy over the postings, Ms Kamat had taken over the Margao Municipal reigns on January 1, but she still continues to preside over the affairs of Quepem Sub-divisional Magistrate. In fact, she constantly shuttles between Margao and Quepem on a day-to-day basis, hampering civic administration.
Take note of the hardships faced by the citizens in the absence of a full-fledged Chief Officer, Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva telephonically spoke to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday and virtually pleaded with him for a full-time officer. “Municipality work is hampered because the Chief Officer continues to hold two charges. I have requested the government for a full-time Chief Officer,” Arthur said.
Incidentally, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, who holds the Revenue portfolio, had told newsmen during his visit to the city recently that it will take some time before the government deputes full-time officer to the civic body.
And, he attributed the shortfall to the promotions of grade II officers. [H]
