Youth Championship League kicks off today

PANAJI: Youth Champions League (YCL), a football festival in which over 250 schools from all over India are expected to participate, will be officially opened at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Monday.

The championship aimed at encouraging youth football will be held in three categories U-12, U-14 and U-17 for both boys and girls, and will be played at four grounds—Calangute and Aldona in North and Assolna and Curtorim in South. The championship will kick off at Nehru Stadium from 5 pm onwards with march past by all the participating teams amid musical extravaganza. This will be followed by freestyle football, the winners of which will get a chance to participate in the world freestyle football.

The main attraction of this mega event will be the former Portuguese winger Luis Figo who is set to visit Goa on November 1.
Figo, a brand ambassador of YCL, is slated to participate in an exhibition football match to be played between Goa XI and India XI at Fatorda Stadium on November 1.

Figo will lead the Goan side while the India XI side will be led by Churchill Brothers’ skipper Roberto Silva alias Beto.
Besides, there will be musical concerts by Goa’s very own Remo Fernandes, Lorna Cordeiro, Sonia Jaffar and others.
The finals of the Youth Championship League, for both boys and girls, will be held on November 1. Fifteen lucky participants from the championship will be selected and sent for a two-week training camp at the Carlos Quieroz academy in Portugal.[NT]
