Yuri Alemao likely to head NCP youth wing
Young gun, Yuri Alemao is likely to take over as the state Nationalist Congress Party’s youth leader, party sources said. The younger Alemao, son of former minister and former Cuncolim MLA, Joaquim Alemao and nephew of South Goa strongman, Churchill Alemao contested and lost on the NCP ticket in the March legislative elections to BJP’s Subhash Fal Dessai. Faldessai polled 7454 votes or 34.67 per cent while Yuri Lenon Alemao got 6971 votes or 32.42 per cent.
Sources indicate that the NCP that faced a drubbing in the last elections is to undertake a much anticipated revamp with even the senior position likely to see change with front runners being former MLAs and ministers, Jose Philip D’Souza and Nilkant Halankar.
The NCP, a coalition partner in the erstwhile Digambar Kamat-led government with two ministers and 3 MLAs in the last assembly was completely washed out not winning even one seat even though it had “imported” arguably strong candidates for its allotted seats.
Meanwhile, the State unit, joining the bandwagon of protests witnessed all over the country over the heinous and brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical intern, the state NCP led by its girl youth wing, the Rashtravadi Yuvati Congress, held a silent protest candle vigil march to demonstrate solidarity with rape victims, led by Jose Philip, Nilkant and Yuri Alemao, besides its state chief Surendra Sirsat and general secretary Avinash Bhosle.
The march began from Nationalist Congress Party office at Panjim and ended at Azad Maidan, winding its way via Don Bosco School, 18th June Road, going past the Merry Immaculate Church and joining D B Road near Custom Circle. [H]
